The Bepposax Revolution in Gamma–ray Burst Science

چکیده
We review the BeppoSAX discoveries and studies in the field of Gamma-Ray Bursts, which allowed a huge step forward in the understanding of these still mysterious and highly interesting astrophys-ical sources. 1. THE BEPPOSAX MISSION AND ITS SCIENTIFIC PAYLOAD BeppoSAX was a mission of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) with contribution of NIVR (Netherlands) launched in April 1996 and ended in April 2002. It was characterized by a Low Equatorial Orbit with 3.9 • inclination and ∼600 km altitude, resulting in a low and very stable background (few % variation along a single orbit). The scientific payload covered an unprecedented broad energy band (0.1–300 keV) and was composed by two set of instruments: the Narrow Field Instruments (NFI), pointing along the satellite Z axis, and two wide field instruments pointing in directions perpendicular to it. The NFI included (we report in parenthesis the energy band,

Six Years of Gamma Ray Burst Observations with BeppoSAX
I give a summary of the prompt X–/gamma–ray detections of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) with the BeppoSAX satellite and discuss some significant results obtained from the study of the prompt emission of these GRBs obtained with the BeppoSAX Gamma Ray Burst Monitor and Wide Field Cameras. 1. The BeppoSAX revolution All the efforts performed before BeppoSAX, an Italian satellite with Dutch participatio...
متن کاملIntegrating the BeppoSAX Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor into the 3rd Interplanetary Network
We have added the BeppoSAX Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor to the 3rd Interplanetary Network of burst detectors. We analyze 16 bursts whose positions are known to good accuracy from measurements at other wavelengths. We show that there is excellent agreement between the Ulysses/BeppoSAX triangulation annuli and the known positions of these events, and that these annuli can in many cases provide useful ...
متن کاملBroad Band X-ray Spectral Properties of Gamma-Ray Bursts with BeppoSAX
In about one year, five gamma–ray bursts were simultaneously observed with the Wide Field Cameras and Gamma Ray Burst Monitor aboard the BeppoSAX satellite. From some of them X–ray afterglow emission has been clearly detected with the same satellite. In order to understand how GRB emission is related to the X–ray afterglow, we are performing a systematic study of the spectral properties of thes...
متن کاملHigh resolution imaging of the X-ray afterglow of GRB970228 with ROSAT
We report results of a ROSAT HighResolution Imager (HRI) observation of the X-ray error box given by the BeppoSAX Wide Field Camera for the gamma-ray burst that occurred on 1997 February 28. The observation started 10 days after the burst and ended three days later, with a total exposure of 34.3 ks. An X-ray source was detected within the 3 WFC error box and its position determined with a 10 ra...
